Underage Drinking Party in Morris Twp Leads to Charges of Homeowner

MORRIS TWP., NJ – A Morris Township homeowner allowed about 30 people below the legal drinking age to drink alcoholic beverages in his house on Jan. 20, knowing that the party-goers were underage, police said.

The man was charged with making his property available for underage consumption of alcohol, a disorderly person offense, said Morris Township Police Cpt. Mark DiCarlo in a press release.

The captain said police responded to complaints about noise coming from the house on Normandy Heights Road and “quickly discovered” the party in full-swing. He said there were about 30 young people in the house, all being less than 21 years old and about half of them being juveniles.

Although DiCarlo did not specify who was charged, he reported that “other charges stemming from the incident included underage possession of alcohol and providing false information to police.”

The captain said there were no injuries or medical emergencies. “Unfortunately, this is not always the case and the initial alert to police is the dispatch to a medical emergency involving one of the attendees,” DiCarlo said. “Besides the health risk involving underage drinking and associated offenses, there are usually other social implications which include educational institution punishment, potential criminal record and loss of college opportunity.”

The homeowner faces up to six months in jail, probation and a fine if convicted, DiCarlo said.

“Parents are also reminded that there are criminal as well as potential civil punishments for providing alcohol to minors,” he stressed. “Please be responsible and assure our youth are positively influenced and kept safe from potential dangerous situations.”
