HANOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ- One of the largest and most unique shopping and dining experiences in the country is ready to open their doors to Morris County. Wegmans is coming to town.

July 23, Wegmans of Hanover Township will open its doors.  This is the ninth store to open in New Jersey, with 92 overall stores in six states.  The origin of Wegmans dates back to 1916 when brothers Walter and John Wegman worked at their parents’ grocery store in Rochester, New York. Peddling produce from a pushcart moved on to opening Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company a year later, the foundation of Wegmans Food Markets. Later they expand to general groceries and bakery operations along with refrigerated display windows and vaporized water sprays to keep produce fresh.

The first suburban Wegmans opened in 1941 and by 1965, twenty-two stores were open and operating. In 1981 Robert Wegman, Chairman, was awarded the Food Marketing Institute’s highest membership honor; the Sydney Rabb Award., and named “best in customer service” by Fortune magazine in 1987.  The company continued to grow and innovate, hiring executive chefs, giving back to the community and partnering with global entities, opening full service restaurants in stores, operating organic farms and named the number one company to work for by Fortune in 2005.

Wegmans entry into New Jersey came in 2005 with a store opening in Princeton, and later this month Hanover Township will join the family. This is the third store opening for manager Tim Lockwood and he told TAP Into recently “The community of Hanover Township has been incredibly welcoming and great to work with”.  The store has employed 500 people, most of which are local. “We are community minded, this is our community’, Lockwood said. Supporting local farmers and sourcing local produce meats and products brings  sustainability to the brand, “freshness uses less fuel”, he added. The company has also donated 110 million dollars in scholarships and support of local food pantries.

“We live by values and high standards are most important along with service, quality and commitment to low prices” Lockwood said. When asked about the existing shopping options he explained that every month nearly 500 products are assessed and that Wegmans is comparable to competitors.

The Hanover Township store promises to be a unique shopping experience. It is the first New Jersey location to include a Burger Bar. There is also an in-store pizza oven that cooks pizzas in minutes at 800 degrees.  Wegmans in known for its organic salad bar, restaurant –quality take home ready, entrees and sides, their own “The Buzz Coffee Shop” , floral shop, housewares and over 50,000 products including more than 3,000 organic selections.

Four generations of Wegmans have masterfully steered the brand to become one of the largest privately held companies in the United States.

The opening in Hanover Township is set for July 23. Many exciting things are planned including some surprises and an excellent opportunity to sign up for their Shoppers Club membership. For more information click here
