As Martin Luther King Day is synonymous with a day of service, and in honor of it being the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates Dr. King’s life and legacy, the Madison Area YMCA is holding an event at the Family Center’s lobby 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 20, for the community to have an opportunity to learn more about TOGETHERHOOD® and join its dedicated group of volunteers. 

TOGETHERHOOD®, the Y’s Signature Program for Social Responsibility, empowers members to plan and lead volunteer service projects that address the needs of our community. Working side by side with neighbors and community partners, TOGETHERHOOD® volunteers make new friends, improve lives and contribute to a stronger and more inclusive society. Many projects are great volunteer opportunities for the whole family.

Volunteer opportunities at the Y and at other locations are ongoing throughout the year. Projects in 2020 include:

Madison Rotary Club and Foundation’s 5thannual End Hunger 3.6 on Sat., March 7. Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of malnutrition or starvation. In NJ and NY, one in five children relies on food stamps to provide daily meals. TOGETHERHOOD®will help with the packaging of meals for distribution to the New Jersey Salvation Army, The Table of Hope and the Market Street Mission in Morristown, Eva's Village in Paterson, St. John's Soup Kitchen in Newark, and the Bowery Mission in NYC.   

Madison’s May Day on Sat., May 2. TOGETHERHOOD® will join more than 800 volunteers to help with this town-wide beautification day to clean up Madison's public spaces.

Bridges Outreach in June.TOGETHERHOOD® will help collect ingredients and package sustainable lunches at a lunch-making party. Bridges delivers more than 65,000 brown bag lunches every year. 

In September, TOGETHERHOOD® will join Moms Helping Moms Foundation, a New Jersey baby supply and diaper bank that serves low-income families in New Jersey, by collecting and sorting diapers, wipes and diaper cream at their warehouse for distribution to moms.

TOGETHERHOOD® has also participated in service projects with St. Hubert’s Animal and Welfare Center, First Baptist Church and Sister Pat’s Kids Camp.
