HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Former state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli has declared his candidacy for the Republican New Jersey gubernatorial nomination.
This will be his second run at the state's top elected office.
New Jersey residents will vote in the state's gubernatorial election in November, 2021.
"It's Time to Fix New Jersey" will be the theme of his campaign, His campaign email address and website reflect that - fixnj@Jack4nj.com and Jack4nj.com.
The Hillsborough resident, who began his political career as a councilman in Raritan, will return to the town where he grew up to make his official announcement at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 21st at the John F. Kennedy school, where he was a student.
Ciattarelli served as mayor of Raritan before running for election as a Somerset County freeholder. He then served three terms in the state Assembly from 2011-2018 before seeking the Republican nomination for governor in 2017, running against former Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and three others in the GOP primary, won by Guadagno.
Other GOP challengers to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy are expected to include Republican State Chairman Doug Steinhardt, Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.
Though he was denied the opportunity to run against Murphy - who defeated Guadago by an overwhelming margin - Ciattarelli did receive endorsements from seven of the 21 Republican county committees prior to the 2017 Primary vote.
What has been a poorly kept secret - Ciattarelli indicated a desire to take another shot at running for governor just a few months after the November, 2017 election - was made official yesterday on his campaign website and Facebook page.
News of Ciattarelli's intentions came on the same day that Murphy delivered his second State of the State address at the Statehouse in Trenton.
His Facebook page reflects Ciattarelli's pre-announcement activities, including several swearings-in at reorganization meetings throughout the state this month. (https://www.facebook.com/Jack4NJ/).
The Jan. 21st campaign launch is scheduled between 4:30-5:30 p.m. Doors open at 4 p.m.
