MADISON, NJ - Effective March 1, ordinances banning single-use plastic bags at retail establishments in Madison take effect.
In addition to prohibiting the use of plastic bags, borough officials will be regulating the use of paper bags by retail establishments. Paper bags will be available upon request for 10 cents per bag.
"Bring your own bag to avoid the mandatory charge for paper bags, except where exceptions apply", stated borough officials.
On March 1, Stop & Shop in Madison will be giving away reusable bags to help shoppers make the transition. The store will give away one free reusable bag to every customer who brings in one or more carryout plastic bags for recycling.
The plastic bags will be collected and recycled into composite wood, which is used for decking, park benches and playground equipment, said the store.
