MADISON, NJ - Governor Murphy signed an Executive Order allowing municipalities to extend the grace period for second quarter taxes.

According to the Executive Order No. 130, the grace period for municipal taxes has been extended to June 1.

As you may know from one of my previous messages, in order to provide some relief to those struggling to make ends meet in these difficult times, the Council waived interest and penalties on second quarter taxes until July 31", said Mayor Conley. "You should have received a letter stating the interest rate of 0% for this time period, please toss that letter and expect a new version".

"Today’s executive order supersedes Madison’s action and directly states that while municipalities have the option to extend the deadline to June 1 they cannot take any action beyond that, including eliminating interest and penalties", he said. "I have called for a special virtual Council meeting this Friday at 3 P.M. for the sole purpose of rescinding our now voided action and extending the due date for the second quarter taxes to June 1".

Taxes must be paid by June 1 or residents will owe interest dating back to May 1.

"I apologize for the confusion but this is a difficult time with many moving targets", Conley said. "The suspension of interest and penalties on your water and electric bills is still in place from March 13 to July 31".

Residents can pay their municipal taxes online or mail in their payment.

If you are paying by mail, give plenty of time, as the tax office does not accept postmarks. Checks should be made payable to the Borough of Madison. If you wish to receive a receipt, enclose the entire bill and payment with a stamped, self-addressed envelope. The tax bill stub with the check is sufficient if you do not require a receipt.
