Atlantic Health System’s Chilton Medical Center has announced it is a recipient of the Healthgrades 2020 Patient Safety Excellence AwardTM. This distinction places Chilton Medical Center among the top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

Healthgrades based this award on a review of 14 patient safety indicators within the Medicare inpatient population among approximately 4,500 U.S. hospitals. Inpatient data was collected from the Medicare fiscal years 2016-2018 measuring “the rate at which serious, potentially preventable complications and adverse events occur,” according to Healthgrades’ methodology.
“Patient safety ratings evaluate the safety and quality of care at a hospital by measuring the rate at which serious, potentially preventable complications and adverse events occurred in the hospital,” according to the 2020 Healthgrades’ Methodology Report for Patient Safety Excellence. In addition to outstanding scores through their methodology, there are extensive requirements for eligibility of Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award. This includes a high standard quality threshold, zero occurrences of foreign objects left during surgery or procedure, adequate sample size for statistical evaluation, and robust data collection.
Chilton Medical Center has made significant strides to achieve the highest standards in quality and patient safety. In 2019, Chilton – along with its four affiliated hospitals at Atlantic Health System – began its journey to become a High Reliability Organization (HRO). To date, all employees and medical staff have taken the required four-hour training program to further enhance the focus on patient care. Earlier this year, Chilton also received the highest possible safety rating of ‘A’ by The Leapfrog Group in its Spring 2020 Hospital Safety Grades for the fourth consecutive time and was designated as a Magnet® hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
