MADISON, NJ - "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape, Plan and Practice Your Escape". That's the motto for this year's Fire Prevention Week in Madison, announced Borough Officials.
Fire Prevention Week takes place from October 6 through October 12 and towns, fire departments as well as the Red Cross remind residents to plan escape routes and test smoke alarms.
“The colder weather brings with it an increased risk of home fires, most caused by cooking and heating equipment,” said Rosie Taravella, CEO of Red Cross New Jersey Region. “Now is the time to take all necessary steps to ensure you and your family remain safe.”
Residents should test alarms monthly and change batteries at least once a year, said officials. Plan and practice an escape route by figuring out two ways to get out of your home, selecting a meeting spot and practicing your escape plan, they said.
According to the Red Cross, home fires take seven lives each day in the U.S., most often in homes without working smoke alarms. Don't become a statistic. Plan and practice your escape.
