Suspect in Newark Homicide Apparently Shoots Himself After Vehicle Chase Ends in Summit


SUMMIT, NJ – A suspect in a shooting that claimed the life of a Newark woman apparently shot himself after a police pursuit ended in the vicinity of Overlook Medical Center in Summit.

According to abc7ny.com, the woman28-year-old Tiffany Wilson—was discovered deceased in a vehicle in Newark, and a dark-colored SUV was seen speeding away from the scene. Newark police pursued the SUV on Interstate 78 west to Route 24 and into the streets of Summit.

After police "boxed in" the vehicle, the suspectidentified by abc7ny.com as 31-year-old Kareem Dawson—is alleged to have then shot himself. The suspect apparently survived and his condition is not known.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating Wilson's death as a homicide. 

Due to the ongoing police investigation, the ares of Beauvoir Place at Beauvoir Avenue in Summit are closed, with the Summit Police Department sending out a Nixle alert notifying residents of the shutdown.
