Funds Raised Will Support Madison Public Schools

Madison, NJ– The 17th Annual Madison 5K Run/Walk to raise funds for the Madison Education Foundation is going virtual! From May 11-May 31, 2020, community members are invited to register online at www.mefnj.org for a 1-mile or 5K run/walk and complete their chosen route in their own time with appropriate social distancing measures in place. Proceeds from the virtual race will support teacher-initiated grants awarded by MEF in all five Madison District public schools to enhance and enrich the academic and creative lives of students.

“The COVID-19 crisis has forced our community to hit the pause button, but our mission at MEF is steadfast,” said MEF President and 5K Co-Chair Colleen Taddeo. “Supporting Madison teachers and administrators as they navigate an uncertain timeline of distance learning and figure out a new ‘normal’ of teaching is more important than ever.”

The Virtual Madison 1-Mile or 5K run/Walk can be done outside on tree-lined neighborhood streets or at home on a treadmill. Participants are encouraged to walk or run at their own pace, clock their distance using a smart watch or smartphone, and follow all social distancing rules for outdoor activity, including participating only with people in their household and maintaining a distance of six feet from others.

“We can’t come together for the 5K this year,” said MEF 5K Co-Chair Lauren Natale, “but we can all do our part individually to make a difference for our students, teachers, and schools.”

Madison 5K Run/Walk lawn signs will be placed in multiple locations around Madison, including all five Madison Public Schools (Madison High School at 170 Ridgedale Avenue, Madison Junior School at 160 Main Street, Central Avenue School at 50 Central Avenue, Kings Road School at 215 Kings Road, and Torey J. Sabatini School at Glenwild Circle).

Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to take a selfie in front of the signs along their chosen race route and send photos to virtualmadison5k@mefnj.org for our online “Virtual Victory Selfie Wall.” Selfies posted on social media should include the hashtag #MEFMadison5KGoesVirtual.

“This is not the race we expected to host this year,” said MEF Board member and 5K Co-Chair Marie-France Greer, “but the sentiment is the same.” She went on to say, “Together, we are Madison Strong and we will move public education---and our community---forward.”

Registration for the Virtual Madison 5K Run/Walk ($20 per person and $60 per family) is available at www.mefnj.org. Anyone experiencing financial difficulties but would like to participate should reach out to 5Krace@mefnj.org. Virtual Madison 5K race t-shirts branded with this year’s winning design by Madison High School junior Maggie Perrello and printed by Alfred’s Sports Shop in Madison will be distributed to all virtual registrants after the race.
