MADISON, NJ - The Madison girls’ varsity lacrosse team opened up its season with a victory over New Providence Thursday afternoon. The team is coming off one of its best seasons, fighting its way to thirteen victories and reaching the sectional final last year. With many key players returning, Madison hopes to have even more success this season.
They are off to a great start following the 17-9 win. The game started close, still tied 3-3 with just five minutes left in the first half. However, three Madison goals gave the Dodgers a 6-4 lead at the half.
They came out ready to play in the second half as well, getting ahead 10-5 within the first five minutes.
Senior attacker Lauren Kaye and junior midfielder Clare Culligan lead the pack for Madison, scoring five goals each. Senior midfielder Leah Rutland and sophomore midfielder Kate Christos stepped up as well, with three and two goals, respectively. One of Christos’ goals gave the Dodgers the lead they would hold for the rest of the game. A great defensive effort by senior goalie Jula Tully secured the win.
“We were very excited and happy about the first win,” Christos’ said of the game, “I thought we worked well as a team and hustled the whole game.”
Madison kept it up with a second win at Mount Olive High School on Saturday morning.
