More Than 500 Community Members Completed the Virtual Madison 5K! Funds Raised Support Teacher Initiated-Grants in Madison Public Schools;
Additional Donations Made to Local COVID-19-Related Charities
Madison, NJ – The Madison Education Foundation’s (MEF) 2020 Virtual Madison 5K Run/Walk was victorious! More than 500 community members of all ages---including a few four-legged friends--- registered for the 1-Mile and 5K Run/Walk during the month of May, and dozens uploaded their proud race selfies to the MEF Virtual Victory Wall. Proceeds from the virtual race will support teacher-initiated grants awarded by MEF in all five Madison district public schools to enhance and enrich the academic and creative lives of students.
All race participants were encouraged to take selfies on their socially distanced run/walk routes in front of Virtual Madison 5K signs located around Madison, including at all five Madison Public Schools, the Hartley Dodge Memorial Building, Memorial Park, and Niles Park, and to post their photos on social media with the hashtag #MEFMadison5KGoesVirtual. Photos were also uploaded to a Virtual Victory Wall located at www.mefnj.org.
“We didn’t know what to expect when we decided to go virtual, and we’re truly humbled at the response from the community,” said MEF President and 5K Co-Chair Colleen Taddeo. “We could have easily canceled the race this year, and when I look at how many people registered and all of the amazing photos we received, I’m so grateful we found a way to make it happen.”
Virtual Madison 5K race t-shirts branded with this year’s winning logo designed by Madison High School junior Maggie Perrello and printed by Alfred’s Sports Shop in Madison will be distributed to all registrants. The inspiration for Maggie’s winning design was the apple, an iconic symbol of knowledge and education.
In addition to registering for the Virtual Madison 5K to benefit MEF, participants had the opportunity to designate donations to FLAG, a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping feed front line healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic while keeping local restaurants in business, and the Madison, NJ Small Business Recovery Grant Program, which was created to mitigate the severe economic damage to our local business community caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“When the Madison community decides to show up, they do it in spades,” Taddeo went on to say. “The support our friends, neighbors, businesses, and teachers have shown for MEF and for everyone in our community suffering right now is amazing. We’re grateful to be a part of the Madison Strong movement.”
