MADISON, NJ - The Madison High School Varsity Baseball team, the 2019 State Section champion, was recognized on Tuesday evening in a ceremony in front of the Hartley Dodge Memorial Building. The Dodgers won the NJSIAA North II Group II Sectional for the second year in a row. John Costa Jr., President of the Madison Bullpen Club presented the victorious boys with championship rings and tee shirts.

Nine boys from the team graduated in June and were represented by their parents. Members of the victorious 2019 team are as follows:  Walter Brownlee, Brendan Mariani, Michael May, Vince Costa, Matthew Beneventano, Aidan Bergin, Andre DelaCruz, Michael Lekas, Peter Samori, Carter Shipley, Morgen Bruhn, Luca Evangelista, Jack O’Hearen, Matt Monaghan, Ryan Canfield, Jack Melvin, Max Morales , Jack Flanagan, Michael Maybaum, Will Hart, Matthew Gero, and AJ Gupta.

The team was coached by Frank Dasti and the assistant coach was John Costa III, who had played on a championship Madison team in his junior year and has now assistant-coached two victorious Dodger teams. The successful 2019 season consisted of 24 wins and 6 losses.

The team was joined by 10-year-old ball-boy Frankie Nunn, a fifth-grader at the Kings Road School, who enthused that it was awesome to have the job and that “I have loved baseball since I started playing when I was six or seven years old.”

The Madison Bullpen Club is the official booster club for Madison baseball. Kathy Costa, social coordinator of the club, explained that the club helps support the team in contributing in various ways including funding uniforms and helping in maintaining the playing fields.

The co-captains of the 2020 team are Ryan Canfield, Vincent Costa, A.J. Gupta, and Jack Melvin. The team will feature three returning starters.
