HOBOKEN - Guessing they didn't get the memo...

Macy's, the New York City-based retail giant, have announced that they will be launching spontaneous fireworks displays across the City starting Monday, and continuing all week long leading up to the mega display on Saturday, July 4.

"From Monday, June 29 through Saturday, July 4, Macy’s Fireworks displays will launch unannounced on select evenings across New York City. Each 5-minute display will feature Macy’s signature pyrotechnic scale with thousands of shells reaching heights up to 1,000 feet. Each show is brief and will be over before residents can gather at its source. The displays will be launched from one or two land- or water-based locations over the course of the week-long celebration covering every borough of New York City," said a Macy's media statement.

This interesting public relations stunt comes amidst weeks of unprecedented fireworks complaints regionwide, which have prompted law enforcement and other officials to crackdown on other unauthorized, clandestine displays.

In Hoboken, a week of patrols has netted a number of citations—including the arrest of two men who allegedly shot their fireworks directly into a residential building.

Jersey City launched a Community Response Team, specifically targeting the incidents of fireworks in neighborhoods all across the city.

Incidents in New York City have been well documented on social media, and complaints there are reportedly up as much as 230%.

Macy's displays begin tonight, as the 4th of July Week gets underway. Traditionally, America's Independence Day celebrations revolve around pyrotechnic displays. Budget restraints and COVID-19 restrictions have put a damper on this year's scheduled events.

Those who choose to take in this year's fireworks are advised to take necessary precautions.

"Please note: Staying close to home and following safe social distancing guidelines is the best way to enjoy the show," said Macy's.
