MAHOPAC, N.Y.-When Dan Wildman, host of the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum,” visited Austin Road Elementary School last year, he challenged the students to study civics and learn how governments operate.
Fifth-grade teacher Mary Jean Cerbini reached out to Rep. Kevin Byrne, a Mahopac resident, to help out.
“I thought, who better to do it?” Cerbini said.
Byrne visited Cerbini’s class on Friday, Feb. 9, to talk to the students about things such as how taxes are collected and what the money is spent on. He discussed the differences between state and federal governments and what duties he performs as an assemblyman.
After his talk, Byrne picked up the Valentine’s Day cards the fifth graders handcrafted that he and his staff delivered to members of VFW Post 5491 in Mahopac.
“We deliver them to a different [veterans’] place every year,” Byrne said. “It really makes their day.”
