MAHOPAC, N.Y. – Matthew McMahon, a senior, is an All-Section and All-County runner for the Mahopac cross-country team.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, McMahon, running a 5K in 17:36.1, finished in 19th place at the Section 1 Northern Counties Championship in Pawling.
How old were you when you started running and what got you started?
I started running competitively in seventh grade. My dad was the modified cross country coach so I joined the team and picked up running.
What is your favorite thing about being on the cross country team at Mahopac?
Everything. My coaches and teammates are amazing and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people for my final season.
Do you have favorite team activity or pregame/postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?
Funday Friday before the races on Saturday.
Do you have any personal or team goals for this season?
The team goal is to compete every race. A personal goal of mine is to be All-Section and All-County for the second year in a row.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My biggest role model is my grandpa. He has taught me the importance of family and the value of life. He has showed me how to manage all of the commitments in life with hard work and dedication.
Do you plan on continuing to play sports in college?
Although I am thankful to have many opportunities, I will not continue to run in college.

What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
Rap or throwbacks.
What’s something about yourself people might not know?
My biggest fear is heights. I can’t even lean over the railing on the second floor of a mall.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I wish I could time travel so I could live in whatever time period I want and be able to change history.
Where is your favorite place to go on vacation and why?
My favorite place to go on vacation is the Jersey Shore. My extended family rents a couple houses in Lavalette every year for Memorial Day weekend so it’s sort of a tradition.

TikTok. Got it as a joke and now I’m addicted.
Do you have a current favorite book, movie or TV show?
“Elf.” Hands down.
