MAHOPAC, N.Y. – The Mahopac Indians varsity division baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning Sunday and held on to take a 3-2 victory over Hen Hud in a GHVBL game played at Sunset Field in Montrose.
Mahopac trailed, 2-1, going into the seventh. But the Indians’ Jake Madalin lofted a double to left-center that plated two runs to give the visitors the lead.
Brandon Smith started for Mahopac. Mike Ambrosecchia came on in the bottom of the seventh inning after Hen Hud had loaded the bases with two out. Ambrosecchia struck out the final batter to preserve the win.
Vincent Mariella had Mahopac‘s other RBI.
“That was a big win, definitely a nice win for us,” Mahopac assistant coach Christian Mariella said. “These guys have been close all of their lives, they know each other, go out together,”
Mariella said Ambrosecchia has the right approach for a reliever. “We know he can do that, and he did a great job,” Mariella said. “And our starter, Brandon Smith, was also phenomenal, he’s always around the zone.
“Jake‘s hit was really huge for us,” Mariella added of the go-ahead double. “Vincent Mariella also had a big RBI and did a nice job.”
Mahopac (5-4) had one more game scheduled in regular-season action before the playoffs were scheduled to begin, the week of Aug. 17.
“It’s been a good summer for these guys,” Mariella said. “They’ve played well and had fun. It’s probably their last summer playing ball together, and it’s been a great group. They’ve been together nearly every day, come a long way, and always pull for each other.”
