MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Republican Kevin Byrne soundly defeated Democrat Brian Higbie in the race for the 94th Assembly District Tuesday night, taking 62 percent of the overall vote.
Both nominees were first-time candidates seeking to win the seat currently held by Republican Steve Katz who decided not to seek reelection.
The 94th Assembly District includes Carmel/Mahopac, Southeast, Patterson and Putnam Valley in Putnam County and Somers and Yorktown in Westchester County.
Unofficial results from the Board of Elections show Byrne garnered 19,506 votes (66 percent) and Higbie tallied 10,039 (34 percent) in Putnam County with all districts reporting. In Westchester, with 99 percent of the districts reporting, Byrne led Higbie with 57 percent of the vote, 14,532 to 10,930.
Byrne is a Mahopac resident and a graduate of Carmel High School. He works as a regional director for the American Heart Association.
