MAHOPAC, N.Y.— Last Saturday, the Mahopac Teachers Association sponsored a charity game show and holiday craft fair at Mahopac Middle School that raised more than $2,000 for a variety of charities and school groups. The first annual event featured more than 50 vendors and four game show teams that consisted of students, faculty, staff and administrators.
Dave Gordon, an eighth grade social studies teacher at the middle school and author, organized the event. Gordon has become a regular on the craft fair circuit with his father, Gary, who sells hand-carved wood at a number of local craft fairs. That, along with the experience gained at New York State United Teachers Local Action Program, was the impetus to get the event off the ground.
The event was highlighted by a charity game show, which was won by the Dazzlers (Mr. Reilly, Mrs. Tarantino, Mrs. Croshier, Mr. O’Brien, Michael Callahan, Anthony DeMatteo, Jack Maguire, Patrick McMahon and Colum Ranaghan). Their win meant Sean’s Soldiers, a charity started by Sean Callahan as part of Relay for Life, will receive $793.
The Mahopac Teachers’ Association, which sold popcorn at the event and raffled off a television, raised more than $200 for Community Cares. Other benefactors of the event included Mahopac SEPTO, Mahopac Middle School PTO and Middle School Student Government.
