MAHOPAC, N.Y. – After finishing 8-6-3 and losing to Roy C. Ketcham in the first round of the playoffs in a close game last fall, the Indians are back and looking for an even better fall 2020 season.
“We have a nice group of about eight returning players, and some nice newcomers coming up, and I think we have good chemistry,” veteran coach Dona DiMaggio told Mahopac News this week. “I think the girls are willing to work hard, and I think we’ll do really well. Some of our players bring a lot of experience, and I think we can be good.”
Midfielder Carly Ravoli and attacker Krista Dietz, both senior returnees, will be captains for the team. Other key returning players include senior Tatiana Moran (attack), junior Ava Jennings (attack), junior Avery Przymylski (mid), senior goalie Katie Iarussi, and junior goalie Stephanie Miller.
Also returning are senior midfielders Kerrianne King, Annie Kasparian and Emma Witt. Newcomers Marie Comastro and Grace Witt, both sophomore midfielders, join the varsity this fall. “Marie can add depth to our team, she’s a real spark plug,” DiMaggio said. “And Grace is really strong and can help us on defense.”
DiMaggio believes a realistic goal for this fall’s team is to get past the first round of playoffs.
“The goal is to make it past the first round—if we can get to sectionals,” DiMaggio said. “I think we can be formidable.”
The coach said the team is doing its part to maintain a safe atmosphere, as far as COVID-19 protocols. “I couldn’t be more proud of this group, they’re following every single protocol,” DiMaggio said. “They’re being diligent, they’re being kind, they’re telling me when they can’t breathe and need a break. They’re not whining, they’re doing a really nice job. They want to play hockey, they want to be together and be on the field. I can see their energy, and that makes me feel good about things.”
Mahopac opens Wednesday (Oct. 14), travelling to Fox Lane for a 4:30 p.m. game.
