MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Daniel Moriarty, Fulmar Elementary School’s longtime music teacher, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 6. He was 55.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of a beloved teacher who gave the gift of vocal music to Mahopac students,” said School Superintendent Dr. Dennis Creedon in an email to the district faculty.
Moriarty taught music in the Mahopac School District for 32 years. Creedon said he attended one of his concerts just last week.
“The students sang so beautifully,” Creedon wrote in an email to Mahopac News. “This is just so hard to believe.”
Moriarty, who resided in Tarrytown, N.Y., was married to Mary, who is also a longtime Mahopac teacher and currently works at Lakeview Elementary School. They have four children.
The cause of Moriarty’s death was not known at press time. Creedon called it “sudden and unexpected.”
“The faculty of our Mahopac schools extends our deepest heartfelt sympathies to his wife Mary,” Creedon wrote in his statement. “As an extended family, we share this unexpected grief.”
Gary Chadwick, principal of Fulmar Elementary, said in an email to parents that the school will be “deliberate in moving forward in structuring the remainder of the school year to be as normal as possible for [the students].”
Chadwick said crisis support would be made available at the school.
A wake is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, 3-8 p.m. at McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at Transfiguration Church, 268 South Broadway in Tarrytown.
