MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Carmel police say a Mahopac teen was killed after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a tractor trailer on Route 6 in front of Mahopac Railroad Tie.
Lt. John Dearman said officers were called to the scene Friday afternoon (June 9) at 3:46 p.m. for a personal injury accident. Emergency medical services transported Raphael P. Teixeira, 19, to Putnam Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead due to the injuries he sustained in the crash. Teixeira lived in Putnam Valley, but attended Mahopac schools, graduating in 2016.
Officers from the Carmel Police Department and deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office investigated the scene and said that statements from independent eyewitnesses revealed that the motorcycle was traveling north at a high rate of speed using the shoulder of Route 6 to pass cars that had slowed in traffic. The motorcycle collided with the tractor trailer which was making a right-hand turn into Mahopac Railroad Tie from the northbound lane.
Police said the driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured and was released from the scene following the investigation.
Route 6 was shut down from McMahon Place to East Lake Boulevard for approximately three and a half hours while the investigation took place.
