Mahopac senior Sydney Hughes is a captain on the varsity gymnastics team.
How old were you when you started doing gymnastics and how did you get started?
I started gymnastics when I was 5. I always got in trouble during preschool for cartwheeling around the classroom, and my mom decided to sign me up.
What is your favorite event to compete in? Why?
Beam. I love the challenge of tumbling on the beam and staying on.
During the offseason, how much time do you devote to gymnastics?
I spend around 15 hours each week practicing.
As a senior captain, how do you see your role on the team, and how much did you value being a team leader?
My role is to encourage the team to work together and do their best. I try to lead by example and bring the team closer.
