Mahopac senior Sydney Hughes is a captain on the varsity gymnastics team.

How old were you when you started doing gymnastics and how did you get started?

I started gymnastics when I was 5. I always got in trouble during preschool for cartwheeling around the classroom, and my mom decided to sign me up.

What is your favorite event to compete in? Why?

Beam. I love the challenge of tumbling on the beam and staying on.

During the offseason, how much time do you devote to gymnastics?

I spend around 15 hours each week practicing.

As a senior captain, how do you see your role on the team, and how much did you value being a team leader?

My role is to encourage the team to work together and do their best. I try to lead by example and bring the team closer.
