MAHOPAC, N.Y.-After opening last season in the finals of its own Mahopac tournament, where it mounted a tight but losing effort against Yorktown for the championship, the Indians showcased a promising outlook.

But things went downhill from there and Mahopac’s boys basketball team struggled through a forgettable 3-17 campaign and didn’t qualify for the Class AA sectionals.

It’s a new season, however, and the Indians believe they can turn the ship around under third-year coach Matt Simone.

“A goal this year is to compete in every single game we are in,” Simone said. “We will not overlook a single opponent and we hope to compete every single game and every single possession. After a 3-17 season last year, we are hoping to get back into the playoffs in addition to competing for a league title.”

Six-foot-5 senior center Ryan Dugan, who is coming off an all-section football season at quarterback, will lead the Indians in the paint and is a team captain.

I didn’t realize how old-fashioned about musicals I could be, though, until my wife Elyse and I at long last saw “Wicked.” It only took us 15 years to get there.

A (Burnt) Toast to Love and Marriage, on the Rocks

In its first few moments, sitcom-style comedy “Clever Little Lies” grabs audience attention right away, with one of the most revealing wardrobe changes you’ll ever see on stage. It is done modestly but just provocatively enough to elicit vocal appreciation from amused patrons.

The fast-paced play, starring Richard Kline of TV comedy classic “Three’s ...

The Adventures of Superdog

I was always very impressed that my dog could bark on command and come when I called his name, until I read in the newspaper about a dog that saved his owner’s life by calling 9-1-1. Apparently, when his owner had a seizure, the dog pushed a speed-dial button for 9-1-1, barked into the receiver for help, and then opened the door when the responders arrived.

Honestly, though, it’s ...
