MAHOPAC, N.Y.-Coming off an impressive win over a tough Suffern team, Mahopac was looking to build off that momentum against John Jay-Cross River in the Putnam Challenge.

But the Indians faltered and John Jay handed them a 55-48 setback on Saturday, Jan. 6, at Carmel High School.

Mahopac trailed just 21-19 at halftime but John Jay erupted in the third quarter, starting it on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 35-21 lead.

“They do a lot of dribble-drive motion. They were making us help and were finding the open guys,” Mahopac coach Matt Simone said of John Jay. “They hit a lot of threes. We were looking to protect the paint, but their threes were falling and it’s tough when they’re shooting as well as they did from the outside.”
