MAHOPAC, N.Y. – Declining enrollment will drop Mahopac football down from Class AA to Class A in 2020, said Athletic Director Frank Miele.

As a result, Mahopac will now play in the same league as neighboring school districts such as Somers, Yorktown, Lakeland and John Jay (Cross River).

Depending on how the schedules are put together, Section 1 fans could be treated to a father vs. father coaching matchup: Dom DeMatteo and Mahopac vs. Tony DeMatteo and Somers.

“This will create some awesome rivalries,” Miele said.

Other Mahopac teams will continue to compete in Class AA because football is classified differently.

“It’s just the way the numbers play out in football,” Miele said.

For most team sports, Class AA teams have an enrollment of 965 or above. In football, Class AA enrollment is 1025 and above.

Mahopac is apparently not alone in this abnormality. Fox Lane, for example, is another team that falls in that 1024-965 range. Their football team competes in Class A but all other team sports compete in Class AA.
