Volleyball (0-1)

Mahopac 0 @ Ossining 3
Monday, Sept. 9

Mahopac volleyball was hoping for a better debut to the 2019 season than what they got Monday.

The Indians were playing against a good team in defending champion Ossining (which had already played a match), and they were on the road.

And they forgot to bring their ‘A’ game.

The result was a straight-set loss at Ossining, with the Indians looking inconsistent in a 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 defeat.

“I think we may have forgot we were playing Ossining,” Indians coach Jay Melville said after the match, only half joking. “We were very error-prone. In game one, we dug ourselves a hole. And in game two, we had 14 errors—midway through the game. It was our inconsistency that hurt us today.”

Senior captain Bella Marinelli had 12 kills and four blocks for the Indians, senior hitter Diana Kone had 11 kills, junior Colleen Kelly dished out 24 assists, and senior captain Gabriella Rocchio came up with 19 digs.

“Bella and Diana both gave us good play at the net,” Melville said. “They gave us good hitting, and led the team in kills. And Gabriella, Caroline Link, and Jenna Palmiero were all good for us in the back row.”

While most other teams had already played a match, it was the first one for the Indians, who had a little catching up to do. “They had already played a match, so we were a little behind on match play,” Melville said. “And we were opening against a team with the best player in the section (Mychael Vernon).

“Our service receiving was hot and cold,” the coach added. “Things just didn’t go our way today. We’ll try to learn from the mistakes we made.”
