On Friday, June 19, teachers and administrators gathered to hand out graduation certificates to Mahopac Middle School eighth graders for the annual Moving Up Day ceremony as they prepare to enter high school next fall.
There was non-stop cheering as each student’s name was announced. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, instead of sitting together as a class, the class was divided into four sections for four parades of decorated cars as a DJ played festive music while the students and their families drove from the high school parking lot to the middle school.
Teachers held hand-made signs, waved and blew kisses to the cars as they made their way to the final destination: the front doors of the middle school where principal Tom Cozzocrea, assistant principals Allyson Fallman and Patrick Keevins, and district administrators were waiting. Mr. Cozzocrea called out each student’s name…
“We will miss you!”
“We loved having you!”
“Have a great summer!”
“Good luck at the high school!”
The team greeted each student as they approached and accepted their moving-up certificate and other goodies to commemorate the milestone. The last stop in their middle school moving-up adventure was a picture taken in front of the Mahopac logo before getting back in their cars and driving off with horns beeping loudly.
