MAHOPAC, N.Y.-County Executive MaryEllen Odell declared 2018 the “Year of the Volunteer” in her State of the County speech at the Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac on Thursday, March 15.

“There [are] so many organizations that make up the fabric of this county by volunteering,” she said.

Odell shone a light on longtime community volunteer Thomas Honohan, who began volunteering about 25 years ago when the Mahopac Library was established. Honohan received an ovation for his community participation, including his involvement with seniors in the community; he often drives seniors to and from appointments.

Although her presentation included examples of Putnam County’s volunteer organizations dating back to 1959, Odell needed to look no further than recent occasions to cite examples of strong volunteerism.
