MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Challenger Amy Sayegh handily defeated incumbent Dini LoBue in the Republican primary race for County Legislature’s 8th District seat (Mahopac/Mahopac Falls) on Tuesday (Sept. 12).

With no Democratic challenger in the November general election, Sayegh, who also has the endorsements of the Independent, Conservative and Reform parties, now has a clear path to the seat.

In the GOP primary, Sayegh garnered 57 percent of the vote, defeating LoBue 364-271. In the Conservative Party primary, Sayegh won 20-12.

Tuesday’s night election was a rematch of the 2014 primary when LoBue, who has been a county legislator since 2009, defeated Sayegh. However, this time Sayegh received the party’s nomination at its caucus earlier this summer and LoBue was compelled to petition for signatures to get on the ballot and force the primary.

Sayegh said that this time around she ran a more focused campaign.

“This time I was more direct,” she said. “There was no focus on the candidate; it was all about the voters—District 8 and its wants and needs.”

She said she wasn’t surprised by the outcome.

“I worked so hard and put everything I had into it,” Sayegh said. “I kept it positive and talked to a lot of people. I was very happy with the outcome. I am in tune with what is going here and will be the voice of District 8.”

She gave credit to her husband and three children, who, she said, were instrumental in her campaign’s path to victory.

“We won this as a family and for all the families in the district,” she said.

Sayegh will officially take office in January, which gives her three and a half months to prepare.

“Actually, I am prepared to go today,” she said. “I have my agenda and things I want to accomplish but I am going to take it day by day.”

Sayegh is president and founder of Putnam Community Cares Inc., an organization she built from the ground up, acquiring 501(c)3 status as a public charity in New York State. She is also vice chair of the Greater Mahopac/Carmel Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of the Mahopac Lions Club. She serves on the Putnam County Republican Women’s Committee, Professional Women of Putnam, and Women’s Auxiliary American Legion Post 1080 and is a lifetime NRA member.

To Snark or Not to Snark

My sister used to make fun of me because I didn’t do the Facebook thing.

It took me a long time to even go through the machinations of setting up an account—and I can’t recall the reasons I finally did it—and then once I did, I rarely used it. My sister said that made me a “creeper”—someone who furtively hangs out on the periphery of Facebook ...

The Meaning of the Election Results

There are no national implications from last Tuesday’s election results. Yet, there was our very own senator, Chuck Schumer, saying, “This was a profound election result. This was the rejection of Donald Trump personally, and this was the rejection of Donald Trump’s policies. This was a full-fledged and total rejection of Donald Trump.”

What else is he gonna say? ...

Scared? You Should Be!

The week before Halloween, I went with four of my grandchildren (and a couple of my daughters) to a crowded costume party held at Asphalt Green, a giant soccer field located a few blocks north of Gracie Mansion, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This residential area is distinctly middle class (and above) and home to numerous families struggling to afford huge rents for the sake of living in a ...

Get Your Gig On

It’s understandable that when people see empty storefronts, they infer it’s the mark of economic malaise. It is not. What’s not taken into account by jumping to that conclusion is that times change, marketplace dynamics change, shopping habits change.

Consumers are spending money, all right, just in different places and in different ways. A storefront that made sense in past ...

One More Doggone Diet

“I caught the dog looking at himself in the full-length mirror today,” I said to my husband. “I think he’s feeling a little self-conscious about his thighs. And he’s worried about putting on weight over the holidays.”

“The dog is worried?” my husband asked.

“Yes, he's noticed that he’s put on a few pounds since Halloween and he ...
