Students from Temple Beth Shalom’s Religious School had the opportunity to hone their culinary skills, as well as learn the story of Passover last Sunday (March 31), when they were taught how to make matzah, a crisp, flat unleavened bread traditionally eaten during the holiday.

Yoni Stadlin, founder of Eden Village Camp in Putnam Valley, was on hand to teach the kids how to make the bread from scratch, starting by grinding the wheat berries with a mortar and pestle, adding water and rolling out the dough. To keep with Kosher tradition, the dough had to be created in 15 minutes once the flour was combined with water.

During the process, Stradlin quizzed the students about the Passover story and what it means to them in their personal lives.

“It makes the holiday come alive,” said Rabbi Sarah Freidson. “It’s experiential education.”

The Passover story began when the Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, started worrying that the Jews living in Egypt would outnumber his own people. A baby, named Moses, is saved and adopted by Pharaoh's own daughter. When Moses grows up, he's told by God to command Pharaoh to let the Jews go. This year, Passover is celebrated April 19-27.
