MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Members of the Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation presented a plaque to the Carmel Police Department and Town Board at a Town Board meeting last month, thanking the town for its support of the annual TYathlon.
Ty Louis Campbell was 5 years old when he passed away from cancer. His parents started the TLC Foundation, which also sponsors the annual Muddy Puddles Mud Fest, to help fund research that would change how children were cared for when dealing with the horrible disease. When Ty’s father, Louis Campbell, and Bert Melchner decided to hold a triathlon to honor Ty.
The seventh annual TYathlon will be held in Mahopac Sept. 14 with more than 1,500 participants expected. Hundreds of spectators attend each year as well and nearly $300,000 has been raised.
“But none of this would be possible without the generous support and dedication from the town of Carmel,” Melchner said. “From day one, all we heard was yes. Anything we needed, the answer was and still is yes.”
Melchner thanked the board for supporting and approving the event and the Carmel Police Department and Sheriff’s Department for keeping the course safe. He also thanked the Mahopac Fire Department for providing onsite EMS, and local businesses for their support, as well as the town Highway Department for keeping the roads in good shape.
“And most of all, we thank the residents of Mahopac who come out to the event, let us take over the roads for a morning in September and also make donations,” he said.
