MAHOPAC, N.Y.-The Town Board passed a resolution last week that will extend property tax exemptions for Cold War veterans.

The board passed the resolution, which amends Chapter 137 of the town code, by a vote of 5-0 after a public hearing at its Nov. 21 meeting.

To qualify for the exemptions, veterans must have been on full active duty during the Cold War period of Sept. 2, 1945, through Dec. 26, 1991.

The board created the resolution because the state recently changed the law, which now allows for the current duration of the exemption of 10 years to be extended by local municipalities for as long as the veteran is qualified.

The assessor’s office reported the town currently has 111 Cold War veteran exemptions on the assessment roll. Some of those exemptions would have expired in 2018 if the local option had not been adopted.
