Yorktown Repair Cafe

What do you do with a broken toaster?  Or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true?  Or with a sweater full of moth holes?  Toss it?  No way!

In the Fellowship Hall at Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Curry and Gomer Streets in Yorktown, on Saturday, January 18 everything centers on making repairs.  Starting from 11AM and ending at 3PM, various volunteer repair experts will be available to help people make all possible repairs free of charge.  Tools and materials will also be on hand.  People visiting the Repair Café will bring their beloved but broken items from home (limit 2 items, please - and no gas-powered items).  Lamps, toasters, bikes, clocks, clothes, toys, wooden items, crockery, jewelry, computers / electronics... anything that is broken is welcome.  And can more than likely be repaired.  The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how to determine whether your item can be repaired, and if possible, make the repair.

By promoting repairs, we can help reduce mountains of waste which otherwise ends up in landfills.  Repair Café is also meant to put neighbors in touch with each other in a new way.  And to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home.  Above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.

For more information about items to bring, or if you would like to volunteer as a Repair Coach, contact Sarah Wilson at sarahdwilson@optonline.net.  The event is being co-sponsored by Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group and the Grace Lutheran Church "Green Team".

Jeopardy’s G.O.A.T. goes deep

Watching the indomitable Ken Jennings virtually run away last week with the coveted title of “Greatest of All Time” on the Greatest Game Show of All Time, Jeopardy, got me to asking myself some questions.

Answer: He’s gone deep his whole life.

Question: How does Ken Jennings store so much knowledge about so many things in his head?

But first, let’s ...

On Stage: May the Farce Be With You

Like a famous, old candy bar commercial sang, “Sometimes you feel like a nut… sometimes you don’t.”
For the times you do, though, a stage farce is the ticket to let yourself go, as you go along in totally suspended disbelief with the hellzapoppin hijinks on stage. After all, who says grown-ups aren’t allowed to groan every now and then in the name of mirth.   ...

To the editor,

If you plan on attending David McKay Wilson's upcoming exercise in grandstanding at Mahopac Library, where he'll be stroking his own ego, under the guise of doing a service to the community, by documenting his grudge match against Councilman Mike Barile, do me a favor and ask him why he isn't using the considerable platform he has at his disposal to do something that ...
