NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Mahopac artists will celebrate spring and honor their mothers in “Bloom,” an art show opening at Railyard Arts Studio in North Salem this month.
The works of eight artists from Mahopac will be represented in the spring-inspired show, which opens the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, May 11. The exhibition showcases the works of a total of 19 artists and includes paintings, photography, wood, pottery, clay sculpture, and handmade jewelry.
“I just love Mahopac in the spring!” said Elizabeth Barksdale, local artist, and gallery manager. “We really wanted to celebrate the spring that we see blooming all around us in Mahopac, so we decided on ‘Bloom’ as our theme for our next show. Friends and neighbors really came out with stunning artwork [to exhibit]. This show is perfect to open the Saturday evening of Mother’s Day weekend.”
Mahopac artist Kelly Edwards drew and painted pen-and-ink and watercolor flowers. Mahopac’s Scott Garette and Kathy Frake both brought in brightly painted spring-colored abstracts, and Charles Rogler brought a photograph of hollyhocks that all but plays tricks on the eyes.
Mahopac artist Monica Craig brought in so many paintings they could hardly pick, “but we decided on a few we simply had to have for ‘Bloom,’” Barksdale said.
“I love working with wood” added Mahopac artist and woodworker Mark Zeh. “It has its strength which comes from nature, but it is also shapeable and formable. I created this work by soaking the wood and bending it. Cherry has such a beautiful grain. I love the way it darkens over time into such a rich color. This wall hanging is in homage to my mother. The four major curves represent us as children and the work represents how she was always watching over us; I feel she always will be.”
Zeh’s work will be on display along with the work of the seven other Mahopac artists— a total of 19 artists in all. The opening reception on Saturday, May 11, run 5 to 8 p.m.The show runs May 11-22, with gallery hours Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Railyard Arts Studio is located at 621 Route 22, North Salem.
