Mahopac Celebrates at the Street Fair

Credits: All photos by Tabitha Pearson Marshall

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Mother Nature cooperated Sunday as the sun shone brightly in Mahopac and hundreds of residents poured into the business district along South Lake Boulevard for the 15th annual Street Fair. The fair is administered by the Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce and an eclectic blend of vendors and businesses lined the sidewalks to promote their wares and services. There was plenty for the kids to do as well, including rides and games, face painting and visits with cartoon characters. Of course, there was plenty of delicious food on hand provided by area restaurants.

The Education of George Latimer

This is a Dec. 7 Facebook post by Westchester County Executive-elect George Latimer: “Sean Hannity said the other night that Robert Mueller’s investigation was ‘a disgrace to the American justice system’ and his team was ‘corrupt, abusively biased and political.’

“No, it’s Sean Hannity that’s long been abusively biased and political. The ...

Frankly, They Don’t Give a Damn!

I was over at the home of a friend on Thanksgiving and became embroiled in a heated conversation with an acquaintance I’ve known for a relatively short time. He had been talking to another fellow about the recent revelations of sexual harassment by male entertainers, politicians and media personalities, and he was making the point that this type of “alleged” behavior is almost ...

A Sculpted Salute to Sailing and the Hudson

Living in this region, it’s easy to be spoiled and take for granted our proximity to such heaven-sent amenities as the Hudson River. For those of us not active in the environmental movement, it’s all too easy, as well, to lose sight of the harsh reality that this monumental natural resource itself has been spoiled by such unnatural contaminants as PCBs. Fortunately, the damage done to ...

Take Deep, Cleansing Breaths

“Can you tell me what comes with the garlic chicken?” my husband asked the waiter.

“I can tell you,” I said. “Bad breath.”

My husband rolled his eyes at me. We were out to dinner at our usual place and decided the chef must have come into a surplus of garlic, because everything on the specials menu featured garlic. Good for garlic lovers. Not so good for ...

Single People Like Dogs, Too

December 14, 2017

To the editor,

I was pleased to read Steve Reid’s letter to the editor recommending that people adopt a dog from a shelter as opposed to buying a puppy from a puppy mill.  I do agree with him that there are many wonderful dogs available for adoption.  But I’ve experienced and heard many stories about animal shelters not allowing single people or lower income people to ...
