MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Hundreds of area veterans were honored last week with a Thanksgiving dinner featuring turkey and all the traditional trimmings along with a program of patriotic entertainment.
The event, known as the Veterans Thanksgiving Dinner, was held Nov. 16 at the Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac. It was sponsored by Purple Heart Homes and Councilwoman Suzi McDonough.
The dinner, which had two seatings, is in its eighth year. It was originally the brainchild of former state Sen. Greg Ball. After Ball left politics and moved away, McDonough, who had served as Ball’s chief of staff, took over and kept the dinner going.
Forty turkeys were cooked for the occasion, donated by the Mahopac Stop & Shop. A cadre of volunteers helped served the meals, including members of Mahopac’s Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Singers from the USO performed, as well as 11-year-old Lola Lauro of Mahopac, who gave renditions of “God Bless the USA” and “Over There.” There were also door prizes awarded to a vet or their guest at each table.
