MAHOPAC, N.Y. - SHAPE America—Society of Health and Physical Educators—has named Lakeview Elementary School physical education teacher Donn Tobin the Eastern District Elementary School Teacher of the Year.
The SHAPE America Teacher of the Year (TOY) program recognizes outstanding teachers in physical education fields at the elementary, middle and high school levels. To be eligible for the Eastern District Elementary School Teacher of the Year award, candidates must have received their state’s TOY award. The Eastern District geographically includes Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virgin Islands.
The mission of SHAPE America is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to lead healthy, physically active lives. As the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals, SHAPE America works with its 50 state affiliates and national partners to support initiatives such as the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, Let’s Move! Active Schools and the Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart programs.
Tobin will be honored with fellow regional award recipients throughout the nation during the 2019 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Tampa, Fla, where he is in the running alongside his five fellow nominees to receive the National Physical Education Elementary School Teacher of the Year Award from SHAPE.
“I would like to thank my colleagues and administrators for their support throughout this process,” Tobin said. “Most of all, I am grateful to my students for their hard work and optimism in my class. It makes me love what I do.”
