MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The eighth annual English for Speakers of Other Languages (E.S.O.L.) Multicultural Dinner was held earlier this summer at the Mahopac Middle School.
The event was created by Susan Cotten, an MMS E.S.O.L. teacher, to celebrate the diversity of Mahopac students and to honor and acknowledge the contributions and cultures of the immigrant families in the community.
The festivities included a potluck-style menu where families brought traditional home-cooked meals and desserts to share with the group as the students read poems in their native languages.
The event was attended by dozens of members of the community and school district, as well as E.S.O.L. teachers and school administrators.
The celebration creates an open and informal setting in which people of different cultures can interact. They share food and conversation and learn about their differences while developing an understanding of their commonalities.
