MAHOPAC, N.Y. - “Stuck in Bed: The Pregnancy Bed Rest Picture Book for Kids … And Moms,” written by Mahopac High School teacher Jennifer Degl and Angela Davids, is a recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award.
The Mom’s Choice Awards honor the best in family-friendly media, products, and services. The authors are well-known for their advocacy for women experiencing a high-risk pregnancy and those who have delivered prematurely. They wrote the book to show high-risk mothers who are dealing with bed rest how they can find ways to interact with their younger children and keep their bond strong. This is a major concern for mothers who have to limit their activity. One way to connect is reading this book together.
“Stuck in Bed” is a book about pregnancy bed rest from a child’s perspective. Like most kids, the son in this story asks a lot of questions.
“The mom answers them with honesty but also optimism,” Davids said. “The mother explains that although things will be different for a little while, the two of them can still find ways to have fun together.”
Davids spent 15 weeks on bed rest at home while her daughter was two-and-a-half.
For Degl, she already had three children, with her youngest age 3 at the time she was on bed rest both in and out of the hospital, for six weeks.
“Moms having a high-risk pregnancy can also use some reassurance, so we’ve included tips about how they can still be a fantastic mom, even when they’re stuck in bed,” Degl said. “We show moms how to make the most of their time together and guide them in talking to their children about bed rest in a positive way.
Degl is the founder of Speaking for Moms & Babies, Inc., an organization that advocates for maternal and neonatal health by lending a parent’s voice. She recently chronicled the daily struggle of high-risk pregnancy in the Journal of Pediatrics article, “Remembering the Power of Stories in Pediatric Research” and in her first book, “From Hope to Joy: A Memoir of a Mother’s Determination and Her Micro Preemie’s Struggle to Beat the Odds.”
