MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Emma Goodrow of Mahopac.
Goodrow received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 at Mahopac High School’s Senior Award Night for her volunteer service in the community from Donald J. Farrell, the FASNY sergeant-at-arms.
“My father is a FASNY member and my family has a long history in the fire service. I am proud to follow in their footsteps and continue the family tradition of volunteerism.” Goodrow said. “The relationships I have formed through the fire department are long-lasting. Many of the people in my firehouse are like family to me. They are all very supportive and helpful in everything that I do.”
Goodrow plans to attend Drexel University this fall where she will study biomedical engineering.
Outside of the firehouse, Goodrow enjoys playing club soccer, which she will continue to do at Drexel. She also holds a third-degree black belt in taekwondo.
Goodrow is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship.
“My advice for anyone considering joining the fire service is that doing so will be the best decision you’ll ever make,” she said. “Not only will you have a great time and learn a lot, but the relationships you build with other members will last a lifetime. I am very grateful for everything the fire service has taught me.”
Scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
