MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The League of Women Voters of Putnam County has selected Nina Plateroti, a junior from Mahopac High School, to attend the 19th annual Students in Albany program, May 20-23.

Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc., it is an intensive three-day residential training experience designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State. It is an opportunity for students to experience firsthand the inner workings of the state government, to tour the state’s capitol, and to be given an afternoon to shadow their senators and assembly members as they attend sessions on the Chamber floors.

High school students were asked by their local Leagues to submit a written application, along with recommendations from a teacher and department chair, to apply for this opportunity. The LWV-PC said it received some outstanding applications from the local high schools. Plateroti was called “an exemplary student.” She maintains a 4.0-grade average and still finds time to be involved, and a leader, in school activities. She also volunteers her time outside the school environment.

“I am a firm believer in the importance of being active within one’s community,” Plateroti said.
