MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Mahopac showed off its big heart on Saturday, June 1, as participants came out under sunny skies to partake in the 21st annual Relay for Life., the major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
During the course of more than two decades, the Mahopac Relay has raised more than $ 5 million for cancer research. It’s the greatest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in the New York/New Jersey area and one of the Top 10 Relay for Lifes in the nation.
The opening ceremony kicked off at 11:30 a.m. and the event finally ended more than 12 hours later, at midnight. Throughout the day there was a range of activities for young and old, including a silent auction, live music, dance performances and plenty of food and beverages.
The Relay for Life movement unites communities the world over to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight. Cancer survivors and family members of those who lost the battle march in tribute around the high school track along with teams which work together to raise money for the cause. The climactic moment is the lighting of the luminaria, candles inside paper bags, each dedicated to someone who has died.
