CARMEL, N.Y. - Putnam Hospital Center earned the distinction of an ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit focused on improving healthcare quality, safety and transparency.

“This is a nationally recognized score indicating the efforts a hospital puts forth to keep patients safe each and every day,” hospital President Peter Kelly said. “This is a true validation of the many efforts made by all the staff at Putnam Hospital in the pursuit of a high degree of patient safety.”

Based in Washington, D.C., Leapfrog provided Hospital Safety Grades to more than 2,600 general hospitals with the goal to help consumers make smarter choices in their personal healthcare.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The Safety Grade includes 28 measures, all currently in use by national measurement and reporting programs.

Of the 2,633 graded, Putnam Hospital Center was among 878 hospitals in the nation that earned an ‘A’ rating. Leapfrog assigned A to F grades to acute-care hospitals based on their ability to prevent errors, accidents, injuries, infections and other harm to patients.

Patient safety is a process, not a singular event. At Putnam Hospital Center, an important practice implemented is a daily safety huddle involving departments across the facility to ensure safety issues are identified and addressed in real-time.

“‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this ‘A.’”

Leapfrog’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public at
