Mahopac Man Charged With Sexual Assault of a Child

Fernando Cardenas

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - A Mahopac man faces felony charges after New York State Police say he sexually assaulted a juvenile on several occasions nearly a decade ago.

On Monday, Sept. 11, state police from the Brewster barracks arrested Fernando Cardenas, 54, and charged him with second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, a class D felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

Under New York State law, a person is guilty of course of sexual conduct against a child in the second degree when, over a period of time not less than three months in duration, he or she engages in two or more acts of sexual conduct with a child less than 12 years old. Under state law, it is also an element of this offense that the sexual conduct was committed without the consent of the child.

Police said that an investigation conducted by the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation and uniform members revealed that between 2008 and 2009 Cardenas had sexual contact with a juvenile under the age of 12.

A spokesperson for the Putnam County District Attorney’s office said they could not comment on the case at this point.

According to New York State law, the statute of limitations for felonies of this nature--normally five years for class B felonies and lower— are different when children are involved.

The Putnam County Court issued the warrant ordering Cardenas’ arrest. He was arraigned in Putnam County Court and sent to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in Putnam County Court Oct. 4.

Investigators ask that anyone with additional information regarding Cardenas contact the State Police by calling 845-677-7300. All calls can remain confidential.

The Art of the Deal

I have written repeatedly that the media cannot separate Trump from his supporters.  They did not create him, so they, no matter how hard they have tried, cannot take him down. Only Trump can separate himself from his supporters.

Last Thursday I woke up to headlines saying Trump, Schumer and Pelosi have brokered a deal that will enshrine amnesty on the “Dreamers,” promise more ...

The Ruse of Tax Reform

After failing in his quest to repeal Obamacare, Trump and his Republican cronies have switched gears and are now in dogged pursuit of what I consider unconscionable: cutting taxes on both the wealthy and highly prosperous corporations at the expense of the average American.

Trump guaranteed “the biggest tax cut in history,” and the Grand Old Party is eager to help him deliver. It ...

A Shampoo by Any Other Name

“What’s in the bag?” I asked my mother as she got into the car. She had just come out of the hair salon and apparently had been talked into buying some high-end hair products.

“New shampoo,” she said with some excitement. “My old shampoo was terrible. It really dried out my hair.”

“What brand were you using?” I asked. She thought for a ...

Board Majority Makes Cowardly Move

September 19, 2017

The action taken by the town board majority, and its subsequent press release lauding its own action, is ethically challenged and nothing more than a distraction from the real issues facing this town.

The board majority, declaring Yorktown not be designated as a Sanctuary City, coincidently coinciding with President Trump’s striking down of DACA, is not just about politics, it’s ...
