MAHOPAC, N.Y. - After standing empty for more than a year, the building that once housed the old Kmart store in Mahopac has a new tenant.
Town building inspector Mike Carnazza told Mahopac News that retail giant Ocean State Job Lot will move into the space in the Lake Plaza Shopping Center on Route 6 next spring.
Carnazza said the process to bring in the new tenant should be fairly smooth because the plan is a permitted use (retail) and won’t need any variances. The only changes, he said, will be to the façade of the building to make it coincide with the rest of the Lake Plaza Shopping Center stores.
“We are very excited about it,” Carnazza said. “We are working with them as best as we can.”
Carnazza said that Heidenberg Properties Group, the Closter, N.J., real estate company that owns Lake Plaza, said it plans to pave the parking lot in front of the store in early spring of next year and have the retailer move in sometime in late spring.
Carnazza added that Ocean State Job Lot will initially take over the entire building but will eventually divide the space and share it with another business. He said it was unknown when that will happen, or what kind of business it will be.
Ocean State Job Lot is a discount retailer with stores throughout Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, and New Jersey. It has stores nearby in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie.
The company, headquartered in North Kingstown, R.I., began in 1977 and currently operates 139 U.S. stores with more than 5,600 employees. Merchandise comprises a variety of discounted household goods, apparel, pet supplies, kitchen pantry staples and seasonal products.
“When we started out, we were three people selling an eclectic assortment of merchandise at flea markets in the Northeast. Now, we have over 5,200 associates and have been recognized as one of America’s Best Employers (by Forbes magazine),” the company’s website states. “We are good at what we do, and our customers appreciate the values they can find in our stores. It’s been working for over 42 years. It’s working today. And we’re only going to keep getting better at it.”
Ocean State Job Lot is the largest closeout retailer in the Northeast with more than $500 million in revenue, its website states.
Kmart closed its doors in October 2018 after its parent company—Sears Holding Co.—filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
