MAHOPAC, N.Y. – Senior Nick Ahern is a four-year team member of the Mahopac track team. Ahern qualified for the Section 1 Class A championships (held Feb. 5) in the 55-meter dash, the 4x200-meter relay, and the 300-meter dash.
How old were you when you started running and what got you started?
I started seriously running my freshman year when I was 14 years old.
What is your favorite thing about being on the Mahopac track team?
My favorite thing about being on the Mahopac track team is the team itself and everyone that I’ve meet on other teams.
What is your favorite track event and why?
My favorite track event is the 100 meter because it is a highly competitive full-out sprint without completely winding you.
Do you have any favorite pregame rituals you share with your fellow runners?
I don’t have any pregame rituals.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My biggest role model is a past athlete on our team, Anthony Califano, who broke the school record for the 400 meter on a torn meniscus. I learned from him to give everything your all and never to hold back during a race.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I’m planning on studying mechanical engineering in college because I have an interest in the subject and the major is very versatile.
How you do prepare for a meet? Do you listen to any music? If so, what kind?
To prepare for a meet I tend to listen to some light music to calm my nerves before I run.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have a superpower it would be to be able to teleport because I would be able to go anywhere in a split second
What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?
People would be surprised to know that I am in Civil Air Patrol.
What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?
My favorite place to visit for vacation is Ireland because it is beautiful and I have family that lives there.
What is your favorite place to eat locally?
I like to go to a small Japanese place called Yami Ichi.
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
I spend a lot of my time on my phone just listening to music as I do homework or work out.
For a young athlete growing up in the Mahopac school district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the track team and why should they go out for it.
The track team is a big family and if you are on the fence about joining you should at least try it out for a season because no matter your level of athleticism we help everyone.
