MAHOPAC, N.Y. – The Mahopac boys’ basketball team couldn’t get anything going in a 54-42 loss last Thursday (Jan. 9) to Roy C. Ketcham, but the Indians came back on Saturday with a strong performance in a 60–46 victory over crosstown rival, Carmel, in the ‘United Against Cancer’ game for both teams.

Saturday at Carmel (6-5, 1-1), the Indians (4-5, 1-2) controlled the game on their way to their first league victory.

“We really moved the ball well,” said Mahopac coach Tom McMahon. “That’s not really a strength for us this season, so that was a good sign. And we did really well rebounding (Mahopac had 29 offensive rebounds). We took a lot of shots, but with the rebounding we have a better chance to score. Sixty points is a good number for us.”

Matthew McMahon led the Indians with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. John Cosentino had 12 points, Luke Syku had 11 points and 9 rebounds; Patrick McMahon had 6 points and 9 rebounds; and Ryan Reilly came up with a strong effort with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks.

“Reilly, a sophomore, probably played his best game,” the coach said. “It was an intense game, and big for our team. Matthew had a nice stat line; we need him to do a lot of things. Luke really has been working hard, and he’s starting to see the fruits of that labor. And with John it’s all about confidence, and when he’s confident, his shots are dropping, and we play better.”

McMahon was not happy with the team’s effort two days earlier in the loss to Ketcham.

“We were just horrible, it was really frustrating,” the coach said. “We only play 20 games, and we just didn’t show up. That night, from the start, we didn’t compete. It was a real disappointing night. We got it to seven in the fourth, but no closer. We were bad in the first half—but we were still in the game (down 25-22 at halftime), then in the third we had just two points on free throws, and end up down 11 in the fourth.”

Syku led the way with 14 points and 5 rebounds, and Patrick McMahon added 8 points in the loss.

Mahopac was scheduled to visit John Jay (East Fishkill) at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, and the Indians host Carmel at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 18, as the “United Against Cancer” series continues, with varsity boys playing at 1 p.m. and the girls following at 2:30 p.m.
