MAHOPAC, N.Y. – Fans watching the first half of last Thursday’s (Dec. 12) game between the Mahopac and Kennedy Catholic girls might’ve thought the game was over midway through the second quarter. After all, it took the Gaels over nine minutes to score their first two points, and midway through the second quarter it was all Mahopac, at 21-2.
But the second half didn’t go well for the Indians—who were outscored 42-23—as Kennedy came back to snatch a 58-55 victory in the first round of the Michael DePaoli Memorial Tournament at Somers High School.
“We were up 10 points going into the fourth quarter,“ said Mahopac coach Chuck Scozzafava. “After that we didn’t hit our shots, and they got hot. (Taylor) Brenneman went off in the fourth (she scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half), we had shut them down in the first half, but then they started putting in shots. And a lousy free-throw percentage did not help us (Mahopac missed 11 of 18 free throws in the second half, and hit only 13 of 28 overall). That was definitely a disappointing loss for the girls.”
Caitlyn O’Boyle led Mahopac with 16 points, and Lauren Beberman added 10.
Mahopac went on to beat host Somers in Saturday’s consolation round, 51-46.
O’Boyle led the Indians with 11 points, and Beberman and Kristina Rush each had nine.
“We were up six at halftime, but they started a bit of a run in the fourth,“ Scozzafava said. “We managed to fight it off, I think the girls grew up a little in that game. And we hit some foul shots down the stretch.”
Sophomore point guard Melanie DeMeo was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Indians were scheduled to play Friday (Dec. 20) at Mamaroneck at 4:15 p.m., and Mahopac hosts New Rochelle on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m.
