RYE, N.Y. – Mahopac nearly dug themselves out of a four-goal deficit in the third period against Rye Town-Harrison on Monday night, but dropped another close one, 6-5, at Playland.
The Indians (2-12-1) fell behind 4-0 then 5-1 to the Titans. With about 7 minutes left, Coach Tim Donaghy pulled his goalie to bring on an extra skater. The strategy worked, with Mahopac scoring three goals in four minutes, cutting Rye Town’s lead to one goal with 3 minutes to play. The home team, however, answered back a minute later, going up 6-4. Mahopac would score another goal with 5 seconds to go.
“The team has a lot of character. We have not gotten the results that we want but this group has always worked very hard,” Coach Donaghy said after the loss. “We pulled the goalie and played with six skaters for the last seven minutes. With the extra player and the hard work, that is when the comeback happened.”
Mahopac will skate again at 4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 1) against John Jay (Cross River), at Brewster Ice Arena.
